So lately I've been mulling over the phrase "true friend" in my mind, and have been trying to find out what that phrase really means. What does it mean to be a "true friend" to someone? Do I have any "true friends"?
God has blessed me with an abundance of friends, all who I care deeply for and feel that the feeling is mutual on their side. These people are ones who I might talk to every once in awhile, grab at bite to eat with, or have a good conversation with maybe once or twice a week. Then I have a smaller but not minuscule amount of best friends. These people are there for me every day, and I also try to be there for them. To be considered one of my best friends, you have to prove that you are trustworthy, that you actually care about what I have to say, and that you are there for me if I should ever need you. In my life, that is what I would consider a best friend. But what takes it to that next step? What is a "true friend"?
When I think of an example of a "true friend" my mind always goes to my long time friend Jimmy. I've known Jimmy for several years, but we've gotten closer in the more recent years. Jimmy is always there for me. No time is too late to call, no text goes unanswered, and he's always there if I need him. On numerous occasions, Jimmy has drove miles just to talk to me about a problem or just to check up on me. Jimmy refuses to lie to me, instead he always graces me with the cold, hard, sometimes brutal truth in every situation. He never lets me win at games, and puts up with my sometimes horrid attitude when I lose. He doesn't care to act crazy, listen to ridiculous dance music, go for a coffee run at 3am, or play pokemon monopoly in McDonalds. I would bet all the money I have that if I called him right now, he'd be here within the hour. Because Jimmy cares, he's never to busy to lend an ear, and he truly loves me unconditionally. A true friendship however, goes both ways. I try my best to always be there for Jimmy, day or night. I've listened to him talk about his problems, and I refuse to lie to him. If he calls me, I'm there. Someone who doesn't care that we haven't talked in weeks, and someone who if I haven't seen him in a few days, feels like years of separation, that's Jimmy, he's a "true friend".
I can think of several others who I would count as "true friends", God has seriously blessed me. So again, what is a "true friend"? Someone who is never off limits, and who you are never off limits to. No subject goes untouched, and someone who you lay everything out on the floor for. Someone who accepts your flaws, loves them, and shows you theres in return. Someone who you can talk to about God and who's open to your opinions.
If you can find people like that, you are blessed, they are "true friends."
